Turns out the cat was only behind closed doors for 2 days - college student thought the cat had gotten out and was systematically going through the house looking for her and accidentally closed the door with her in it. Enough time for the poor thing to pee in the sofa. I'm told that the cat wouldn't be alive after 8 days with no water.

My understanding from our vet is that uniquely for cats, they can die sooner from lack of food. Some kind of systemic reaction/shut down from lack of food. They don't slowly waste away like a starving person.

pp here. Googled it. It causes hepatic lipidosis. Without food, the liver starts converting body fat to energy causing fat to build up in the liver's cells. In early stages, the liver damage can be halted or even repaired. Otherwise, fatality rate is like 90%

Try white vinegar. Works wonders and chances are you already have it in the house.

We had a neighbor college kid come in and feed her while we were away so I'm still not sure yet how long she was stuck in the room or why. While she was stuck in there she peed on the cushions of our pull out sofa at least once.

Any recommendations on how to remove the pungent smell / pee from the foam of the cushions? I used a pet cleaner spray for the microfiber cover, but I'm afraid that the pee sunk down into the depths of the foam.

Thanks

Recently, we purchased a foreclosed home. The house had sat empty for over a year before, we bought it the pervious owner had several cats, and the odors were very bad. A friend had mentioned this Air-ReNu paint additive, at first I was wary, but I had to paint the entire house anyway, and if it did work, I would save a lot of money by not having to replace the carpet and carpet pad. It took several days before I could tell it was working now all the smell is gone, and the house smells clean. One application of Air-ReNu remains effective for 10-12 years.

Remove the cat and buy new furniture.

I'm the OP of this thread. I had huge success with Natures Miracles. I bought the one specifically for cat urine. I soaked the seat cushions cover and all (couldn't easily remove the microfiber covers without causing damage to the stuffing), let them dry in the sun and the odor totally disappeared. Didn't even get water stains on the fabric (love that microfiber!)

Sorry pp - cat AND furniture stay.
