This.

If your kid was a high schooler, where every grade matters for college admissions, my answer would be very different.

7th grade math and language can go on high school transcripts

In MCPS, you can request they be left out.

And colleges don't care about ONE QUIZ. Come on.

If that quiz takes an algebra grade from and A to a B, then it effects the high school GPA. Those classes have the same weight as any other classes

The teacher needs to excuse BOTH grades for the impacted students.

I think the teacher should just throw that one out altogether. And offer a retake for all. It’s the teacher’s mistake. I wonder how one loses a stack of tests? Maybe she spilled coffee on them?

Teacher did offer a retest.
OP doesn't want to take that option because evidently her kid didn't really learn the material either the first or second time around.

It sucks the teacher lost them, but sometimes crappy things happen in life.

This is the time to teach your kid how to roll with the punches and build some resiliance.
Sounds like resturdying the material isn't a bad idea anyway.

Everyone in the class needs to take another test. The previous one is void for all students.

Complain to the principal immediately.

How is he stuck with failed quizzes? The teacher said he could retake.

The retake needs to be equally administered. If the teacher can manage that, then half the class should not be allowed to benefit.

Ugh. It happens. Apparently I took them out of her brief case and put a bunch of my mom's student's final exams (college level) into the washing machine when I was a kid. Your kid will learn that shit happens and to give people grace. If the teacher apologizes, accept it. Ask for a fair resolution (like wiping the grade for the whole class) and move on.

I agree with this

Anonymous wrote:My son’s teacher lost a set of exams for half of the class. One half of the class had their grades entered, the others were just listed as “excused.”

This test was given to replace a set of quizzes that the entire class performed poorly on. So, losing these tests is a detriment to the students who won’t get a makeup grade. Teacher said the kids can either keep the quiz grades or take a new test.

At this point the material is 8 weeks old, and the test was 3 weeks ago (yes… there was a 5 week lag between the lesson and the test). Taking the test again feels like a punishment on students for the teacher’s mistake.

My child is really struggling in this class and was so upset to learn his hard work to study was for nothing, and he’s stuck with failed quizzes.

How do teachers/schools typically handle this?

It looks like she offered a solution.

That’s not fair to students who did well on the test but might have forgotten some material now.

This is a terrible situation, but teacher are human. It sounds like the teacher is overwhelmed.

OP, please clarify:

1. Is DC taking this course for high school credit?
2. Is DC hoping to apply to a selective high school program, such as TJ?

We can’t advise you well until we know the answer.

Teacher should not give credit for students whose exams were graded. Everyone should retake the test, not just those whose tests were lost.
