Logistics of Redshirting

Of course, the preferences could change by the time OP's kid is applying for high schools!

Interesting. Seems unlikely that parents would make such a huge decision for a potential minor preference in high school. But DCPS could also have avoided the possibility by phrasing the preference as applying to any child that was retained in one or more grades. That seems to be more who they’re aimed at.

Since we’re OOB for sibling’s school, I’m not sure if we’d have a chance at lottery in K.

Yes. In DCPS they don't have to go along with your request if they feel it isn't appropriate.

Normally OOB siblings in K would get in at most schools.

Isn't K a mandatory grade in DC? If so, and your kid has not completed K, they cannot make you go into 1st.

Seems silly, but a lot of parents forget to buy enough redshirts for their kids to wear during their redshirted year. Don’t forget to stock up.

Older Child is currently enrolled in DCPS - and is OOB
Younger Child has not enrolled in DCPS or Charter (to date)
Younger child is age eligible for K - but you want to put them in the lottery for PreK instead?

As I understand it - for PreK lottery, you can just select the "grade" that you want - the system will not force the grade based on Date of Birth.

True that you can select the grade you want, but if you try to enroll the school will likely catch it and they will re-run your lottery for the correct grade based on age.

But I have NEVER heard of them doing this.
