Denison’s rise

It's a school very few have heard of, OP. So not a lot of people care.

Obviously, OP's kid is there.

Not really. Here's the list from 2013- there doesn't appear to be much movement at all

honestly though, I doubt anyone cares except you.

Ten years ago they accepted 46% of applicants, now they accept 22%. Similar schools - Kenyon has gone from 38% to 34%, Dickinson 44% to 35%, Trinity 32% to 36%, Bucknell 30% to 33%. They have a pretty low acceptance rate as a LAC with their ranking.

That's "rise" you are referring to?

Denison is test optional, with only about 1/2 of students submitting test scores, and of those that do their range is wider than the other schools you mentioned-- 1290-1440 this past year, whereas Kenyon, for instance, has slightly more students submitting but a higher and tighter range of 1380-1490. So it's simply a matter of numbers, really Denison is drawing from a wider pool of possible applicants--there are lot more students who have scores in their range and thus who see Denison as a target--than there are in the range of those other schools. Acceptance rate doesn't tell you a whole lot on its own.

You still have to attend school in central Ohio.

Yuck.

Had never heard of it and now hear a lot…

Very generous merit aid. That's all.

This year's acceptance rate was 17%.

Good article about famous Denison alum Steve Carell:

When asked why he chose Denison, he said "I didn’t get into Bowdoin". LOL.

Definitely not there, too preppy for my family. Just interested in how it’s able to counter the struggles a lot of non elite LACs are facing. So was hoping for people with knowledge on the situation. Seems like LACs in the top 10, maybe 20 are holding up, but in general a lot seem like they’re kind of struggling.

Denison is hanging in there but is still a second tier LAC and likely always will be. They have gone test optional with no supplemental essays and eliminated their application fee. They also allow self reporting of test scores. No wonder kids are checking off a box on the Common App and applying. Their yield rate is now sub 25% meaning that more than 3 out of 4 kids they accept decide against going there.

A lower acceptance rates does not a “rise” make.

Remove the application fee and test score requirement and applications increase while “acceptance” rate decreases. It’s magic!!

But aggressive recruiting a lower acceptance rate makes. We’re in NJ and my daughter (a rising HS senior) gets emails from them every few days. Sort of the way Colby increased its applicant pool an decreased it’s admit rate.
