| totally different characters. East is the place to be. West to me is more boring. |
My favorite place. I grew up just a few blocks away and remember when it opened. Such a gem. |
| How about safety wise, with small children? Which is better, and what are the safest blocks? |

This depends HUGELY on who you are. Everyone knows that the UWS is very traditionally jewish. If you culturally identify with this group, it will be that- kosher restaurants, jewish delis, etc. The community is very tight knit. As jewish as NYC is, the UWS takes it to a different level. UES is traditionally WASPY/ old money but now all kinds. Many families like it because it's close to some of the best private schools and it's quieter. The Far East side (Yorktown) is very young and traditionally had lots of post grads due to being cheaper than other parts of the city but closer to Central Park is some of the most high dollar real estate in the city. |
| UES is safer and quieter better if you have small kids |
| Born on the UWS. Raised mostly on the Upper East. As an adult, split time b/t UWS and another country. UWS all day. |
| Upper East has many of the best of. Best museums, schools, probably far wealthier people than upper West overall. I would 100% pick East. Upper West was always a bit sleepy. It has some good things but overall to me is pretty boring. West was also more heavy Jewish population which might be great if you are Jewish and seeking community. East is more WASPY. |
| UES. Beautiful neighborhoods. |
| UWS |
This has no basis in fact. |
Um, what? I had to check to make sure you weren't writing about Williamsburg or Crown Heights. UWS is full of liberal reform Jews. If you want next level-Judaism, go to certain parts of Brooklyn, where it looks like you're back in the 19th century. |
| how about East Harlem? |
| I lived on UES (96th/Madison) for a decade and taught on UWS. I prefer the UES for its more residential quiet feel. If you have kids, you need to decide first though where you are planning to send: public or private. |
There's a Modern Orthodox segment in UWS, to a lesser extent to UES too. |
| I love NYC but cannot imagine raising a family there. Retirement, possibly. |
