FWIW, a large group of Rhodes alums signed an open letter opposing her confirmation, and noting that her values don’t reflect those of her alma mater (despite the embrace of her nomination by the current administration): https://www.insidehighered.com/quicktakes/2020/10/05/1500-rhodes-alumni-sign-letter-against-amy-coney-barrett.

I have a family member who’s an older alum, and I’d say neither they nor the friends they maintained from college fit the southern stereotypes. But I don’t know what it’s like now.

I recently worked with a youngish Rhodes alum, and she was super-sharp and hard-working. Had good things to say about the school. We’ve also had some interns from Rhodes over the years, and I’d say they were all really solid students.

Her sorority wrote a letter rejecting her values, too.

“Objecting to her values”… How many of the signatories adopted multiple kids from Haiti?

Your crush on her is so weird.

I have a few good friends who graduated from Rhodes. They are amazing people and all successful. They loved their Rhodes experiences and stay connected to the school. I’m taking DS to tour the school because I’ve heard such great things from them.

ditto
I know three people who graduated from Rhodes in the 1990s. All loved it and are highly successful people.

My DS was accepted with good merit money. It would have been the least expensive school he could have attended, especially since the top line cost is actually 20k lower versus other schools. He attends a school with a marginally better reputation full pay but if we were price sensitive, this would have been a very strong option. GREAT option for donut hole families with strong academic kids who can get good merit aid and who don't want to pay 90k/yr for a liberal arts education.

I feel like there was a similar thread recently. I know a kid who is currently there that has found the school disappointing. Minor point, but they apparently have awful cafeteria food.

How big a concern is safety? Would Memphis crime be a deal breaker?

Safety is a huge concern at Rhodes College as well as in Memphis. On campus crime has increased regarding sexual assault & car break-ins. Have read--no firsthand experience--of several students transferring out due to safety concerns both in Memphis and on-campus.

I have visited years ago. Beautiful campus, but not safe outside of the gate at that time.

Rhodes has an excellent mock trial team, fwiw.

Rhodes is fabulous. The typical student comes across as the young adult that every parent dreams of...polite, hard-working, responsible, smart, determined, ethical, friendly, earnest, and tasteful.

As far as Memphis goes, Rhodes has a lovely campus and is in the Midtown area of Memphis with loads of character (turn of the century homes with big porches, many local bars and restaurants). Downtown Memphis is fun including riverfront and Harbor Town. Crime is an issue in Memphis (but obviously not on campus). You have to be smart, similar to other urban neighborhoods.

I’m from Memphis and grew up in midtown (the area of town Rhodes is in). It’s a great school with small classes and wonderful professors, smart kids, a beautiful campus. But I’d be very worried about safety. Memphis is an incredibly dangerous city (one of the highest rates of violent crime in the US).

I know two kids who just graduated. One had an amazing experience the other had an awful experience. Both female athletes fwiw.

Do you know what made it amazing and awful for the two students?
