Updates to Community Service Hours Required for Graduation

Anonymous
I have dealt with high school volunteers for over 10 years in DC. Most of the high school volunteers - don't want to volunteer. It is hard on the volunteer coordinators at many institutions when the students can't focus on simple tasks. COVID has impacted many of the volunteer/internship sites. Many are still not taking volunteers. There are different reason why DCPS has change the requirements.

What is your source, and can you clarify - do you mean class of 2025 has to do 75 hours?

Kind of ridiculous that this year's seniors have to do on only 12 hours and this year's sophomores would be expected to do 75 hours.

Was anyone ever able to verify this info on modified community service requirements for classes 2024 and 2025?

Pre Covid it was 100 hours for everyone.
They waived the requirement through last year.

100 is a lot of hours for some. Start early is my tip.

Why is that ridiculous? This year’s seniors had two years of Hs completely disrupted by COVID. Most couldn’t have volunteered if they tried because places weren’t taking volunteers. Sophomores have three years to do 75 hours. They ll be fine

What I find interesting is this year's Seniors are only expected to do 12 - but next year 50.
I would have thought that the same logic that applied to this year only being able to do 12 would pull through to all student currently in High School.
2024 would be 37, 2025 would be 62....

DCPS HS School Counselor here - that is the information we were provided. Additionally, DCPS does not have the authority to make changes to the requirement only the DC Council can approve it based on OSSE’s recommendations.
