Converting IB grades to 4 point GPA?

Colleges understand what the grades mean, but at the middle school level if you are looking at selective high schools or private, I would rely more on teacher recommendations to explain what the grade means. A 7 is above what would be considered an “A”, and a 5-6 is more closely associated with an A level of performance. It’s rubric-based, so it’s also hard to pin point the difference between a 3-4 or 5-6 for example since they are lumped together on the rubric. IB grading is by nature subjective.

So how do kids apply to Walls?

There is likely a document from the school explaining the grading system that is sent along with transcripts.

I don't know the exact conversation formula, but my kid confirmed that getting an A at a DCPS school is a lot easier (and much more common) than getting a 7/8 at DCI.

I'm wondering if that's why DCI does class rankings?

It should be veryyyy hard for someone to get a 7 (8s can't actually be given as a final grade), which is why it can't simply be converted to an A. Earning a 7/8 means you are at an expert level and are able to apply what you've learned in an unfamiliar setting, so taking skills taught and using them to do something new.

DCI does class ranking? I had no idea. How do I find out what my kid's ranking is?

Is a 4 considered to be a C?

Not necessarily. The grade bands are 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, and the rubrics are different for every subject. You would have to read the wording on the rubric for the subject to get an understanding of what that means the student is able to do.

That's for weighted GPA for high school. If you go by unweighted, 7 is a 4.0, 5 is a 3.0, and so forth.

For middle school I was told that "we do not calculate GPAs for middle school students."

This is probably true. At the 8th grade graduation last year, the final grade average was mentioned for the salutatorians and valedictorians and it was above a 7 I think (or a 6, not sure). So I don't believe they create a GPA for middle school. I don't think it has been a problem for any student applying to selective DCPS or private schools; they know how to translate it.

If you are a DCI family, the DCI family portal website has a one-pager on the MYP grading. But it doesn't show how it translates to a GPA.
