Moving from DC to LA with teens: can public school work and if so where?

I wouldnt live in Bev Hills/Brentwood/Westside/Palisades/Malibu - commute to DTLA would be brutal (although the other great publics are located in those areas).

There are a lot oof great privates, you may qualify for aid, you never know.

noooo. Pasadena Unified is really crappy. South Pasadena is good.

Doesn't seem like your DH's salary is going to adjust enough for the COL.

Torrance, maybe? Schools are good, budget is doable, but commute is iffy.

Burbank would work, but the places you'd find won't be the nicest. Same with Glendale, but the schools are meh there.

Unless you can up the budget OR are flexible on 3 beds, San Marino, South Pasadena, Santa Monica, BH, etc. are not happening.

Yes, South Pasadena high school ranks well. You should visit. It is about 85% Asian which your kids may or may not fit into, depending on where you're moving from.

This. La Canada is its own school district too, not part of LAUSD.

4K is a very low budget for a house in a good school district. You might need to go Glendale or Sherman oaks. I am on the Westside and. One bedroom apartments go for 2700. San Marino, Pasadena etc are great but you will be in an apartment

La Canada. Straight shot down the hills DTLA. The Jet Propulsion labs are in La Canada, not Pasadena as another poster said. Schools are among the best in the whole LA region. Pasadena doesn't have the best schools. South Pasadena is better than Pasadena.

La Crescenta-Montrose is next to La Canada and slightly cheaper, with good schools.

Good luck with the real estate hunt.

Here is a listing of 3bed+ house rentals in Sherman Oaks, as you can see they’re very expensive 😳

The good LA districts are:

La Canada
La Crescenta
South Pasadena
San Marino
Manhattan Beach
Redondo Beach
Rancho Palos Verdes
Pacific Palisades

Basically you want to live in an area that has carved out its own district and is not part of LAUSD. If your kids are small, Bev Hills and Bel Air have split zoning so good elementary schools, but the commute will be bad. South Bay schools (Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, RPV) and Pacific Palisades will be long commutes to DTLA (about 90-minutes w/traffic, 45-minutes w/out traffic). We live in La Canada and it's about a 25-minute commute w/out traffic and 45-minute commute w/traffic to get to DTLA. LA traffic starts as early as 3:30.

With your budget, I'd look into La Crescenta. I know of 2 homes for rent in La Canada and they are going for 5K/month and then 6.5K/month.

No. Not in an area with good schools. You want Beverly Hills High School, Santa Monica High School or Pacific Palisades. Anywhere else within reasonable commute to downtown has terrible high schools.

Can you increase your rent budget by a lot?
