Am I being thrown off the size curve?

Anonymous
This is a spin off from "when did it change", but in the other direction. The sizes are getting so large that I am having trouble finding anything that fits thinner older (40+) women. I was the same size 20 years ago and I was able to walk in any store and find clothes that fit . I am reluctant to go shopping now because I am almost sure that everything will be too big.
Seems like the manufacturers are not willing to waste time and money with my percentile of women who are very thin.

Oh boo hoo.

OP, you need to gain some weight.

Might I suggest you start drinking? A few glasses of wine seems to do the trick.

If for some reason you prefer not to drink, I can share some diet tips. Mine seem to be working nicely.

I have the same problem. I can usually find plain jeans in the junior section, but I end up ordering all my suits and then having them tailored. I realized a few years ago that a little girls "large" had gotten bigger-big enough that I had no trouble fitting it. America caters to fat people. Be glad we are not them.

OP, there are a few brands/stores that have not changed, or have not changed as much. Try Talbots, Ralph Lauren. Stay away from: J Crew; Ann Taylor, Banana Republic.

Why cant you just buy a size smaller?

Most stores have a petite section.

this is soo true. i have an AT skirt from 1996 size 10. if i hold up my size AT skirt size 4 they are the same!

i do feel for you b/c i felt fit as a AT size 10 in 1996 but not thin. now as an AT size 4 - anyone who used to be a 8, 6, 4 is off their clothing scale.

Ann Taylor and the Loft are good for me - but I am 5'3" so I can do their petite size 2s pretty well. Not sure what to suggest if you are taller.

Yes, the vanity sizing is out of control. I'm really a size 2 or 4, but now every store's size 0 fits me. Where the heck do the women who are actually size 0 buy their clothing? The children's section?

I can see how this would be a problem. One day I tried on an ann taylor loft skirt and the 4 was a bit large. I was 5'8" and 140ish pounds at the time, and I thought, "there is no way I should be a 4. how the hell are truly thin/small-framed women supposed to find clothes if I am a 4?" I also got frustrated after Nike resized their sports bras and i (a 34B,which used to be "average") went from a very comfortable medium to mediums being too big to be supportive, but smalls were just a tad too small to be remotely comfortable. I couldn't really care less what the size on the tag says, I just want to find clothes that fit.

Agree - esp with Ann Taylor. I have a size 6 ann taylor suit from 96 that fits the same as current size 0s from there. OP - you need to shop at different stores. There are many brands that still fit thin women, but they are pricier --like Theory. Anthropologie also has small sizes.

Neiman Marcus. They always have tiny sizes. I wait for the sales.

Haha! Or any Asian country.

I love shopping in Japan. I wear a size 0 at Ann Taylor, but I'm "M size" or "L size" in Japan...go fig!
