Parenting -- Special Concerns
|
Rainbow Families DC is proud to sponsor its first ever Parenting Encouragement Program (PEP) class just for the GLBT Parent Community!
Ever thought about attending a PEP class but worried about being the only gay parent, or feeling unsafe to share certain things? Now, with our first "LGBT-only" PEP class, you can be among peers and feel comfortable sharing more openly! Are you Tired of saying the same things to your child over and over with little results? Are rules set just to be broken? Why is disciplining our children so hard and ineffective? Positive Discipline, a PEP (Parent Encouragement Program) talk, is a 2-hour lecture/experiential workshop on how to use productive, encouraging methods to elicit cooperation, respect, and responsibility from our children. We will explore what’s working and what’s not with our current discipline techniques and how positive discipline can achieve desired short and long-term outcomes for our children. When: Saturday, February 5 2:30-4:30 PM Where: Wisconsin Place Community Center 5311 Friendship Blvd, Chevy Chase, MD (adjacent to the Whole Foods @ Friendship Heights). Indoor parking available for $2 per hour. Conveniently located within walking distance of the Red Line’s Friendship Height’s metro station. PEP is dedicated to the building and strengthening of healthy, harmonious adult-child relationships in the home or classroom. All PEP services (classes, workshops, talks, library) present a practical, proven approach to childrearing based upon the Adlerian philosophy of mutual respect, shared responsibility, developing competence, and winning cooperation. For more information about PEP please visit its website located at www.parentencouragement.org. About RFDC Rainbow Families DC is a nonprofit organization for all LGBT parents/prospective parents and our allies in the DC Metropolitan region. We bring parents and prospective parents together in several ways: Conduct educational workshops and events -- like this year's Parenting Conference! Sponsor social gatherings -- such as the DC Capital Pride Parade and annual Summer Picnic. Create space for families to connect with each other directly -- through our new discussion boards and our Big Tent forums. Contact RFDC at info@rainbowfamiliesdc.org. |
| Sounds wonderful. I'm the parent of an LGBT child, and I wonder if Rainbow Families and PEP might ever consider creating a class for parents like me. Rainbow Family parents, think back to when you were 11 or 12. What do you wish your parents had known? What things did they do that felt supportive, and what mistakes did they make? More parents want to support their LGBT offspring these days, but some of us worry that we're clueless. |
