Kids With Special Needs and Disabilities
I know it is controversial. I am fearful of the time-sink with uncertain results, but has anyone tried it, and for what age, and with what results? Who supervised the therapy? (Sorry if this has been hashed over here - haven't seen it.)
Would love to know as well. I have it on my long to do list to call a NFB place in DC here after the holidays.
How about CogMed? Not neurofeedback exactly, but was recommended to us.
A friend of mine told me about one of their dear friends who did neurofeedback and his condition got worse. I don't know the circumstances surrounding it, but do know that he was not helped at all.
It worked wonderfully for my niece. She had 40+ sessions between ages 7 and 8, and has continued with occasional sessions. She's been off all medication for over 2 years, and doing great.
Do you know the center where your niece did it, 14:04?
I don't know what center, but they live in Annapolis, so it would be in that area.
I am the OP. I thought there might be much more feedback on this, given that there has been a fair amount of media attention to it recently. Please, if you've done it, can you post?

I have a friend who is doing neurofeedback with her 8-yr old son with ADHD. They have been pleased with the progress so far and have not had to do medication yet. Here's the dr's info:
Dr. Angelo Bolea, Ph.D. (410) 295-7198. He sees people twice a week at his home in Annapolis (403 Duvall Lane, Annapolis 21403) and twice a week in Bethesda (4405 East West Hwy, Suite 408). No website, but I found an audio interview with him through google. She also gave me links to two sites for general neurofeedback info with links to publications: www.isnr.org www.aapb.org |
PS - not sure why the smiley face came up but should have been Suite 408
I am a therapist working with seriously emotionally disturbed children in a large public mental health clinic. We've been providing NFB in our program for about 5 years, with some very good results. Most of the children we've worked with have been able to reduce or at least substantially reduce the meds they were on. NFB has become a permanent part of my repertoire, especially useful for treating some of the most severe and persistent mental health problems. Unfortunately, it's generally expensive. Be sure the person you work with has appropriate credentials -- e.g., certification by BCIA. The www.ISNR.org website has excellent information about neurofeedback and lists providers (as does www.aapb.org). There are a number of certified individuals in the D.C. area who provide this intervention.

I also have a friend that experienced wonderful results with her son. He is 11 and now it's not awful to be around him! They went to Sierra EEG http://sierraeeg.com/ in Grass Valley, CA. After what I have seen with her son, I'd try it if I had a child like him.
Hope this helps! |
