| I have come to acknowledge that I'm a short, fat girl. I wasn't always this way but three kids in three years, two of whom have special needs, DH and I working full time, housing issues....I've just gone to pot. I need to lose 60 pounds to be very trim but I'd settle for 30. That's not going to happen any time soon and I've got to get a more professional, affordable wardrobe. I've searched the archives for "plus size" and "fat girl" but didn't get any hits that can tell me where a short fat girl can buy clothes. I'm tempted to ask the nicely dressed women I see on the metro but I wouldn't want to offend them by suggesting I think they look like me......Any suggestions? Thanks! |
Macys and Dress Barn both carry short and fat sizes
Macys has Jones New York and other nice brands in larger sizes. |

Please please please do not buy your clothes at a store called "Barn."
There are a number of nice plus-size clothing stores - Lane Bryant, Avenue, Ashley Stewart, etc. Also I dont know how "plus" you are, but Nordstrom often has plus sizes - especially online and they have size 18 and maybe 20, but I dont think any larger. Good luck! You can definitely be plus size and still look great and be stylin! |

2nd vote for Macy's. Nordstrom has some $ jackets and the like.
For basic trouser pants that are appropriate for work but not "job interview" high quality, Old Navy. Lands End has a LOT of choices and they have short inseam pants in Women's sizes. Blouses, trousers, office-appropriate cardigans. No jackets. super durable stuff. |
| Thanks everyone! |

Are you petite (under 5'4") and larger than a 12 or 14? That gets a lot harder to find. In addition to the above, I'd also try Liz Claiborne.

| Talbots has petite "plus" sizes. I think they call it "petite woman." |

I'm short and chubby, too, but I guess I don't find that it hinders my sassiness all that much. I'm a big (tee hee!) Lane Bryant fan, as they also carry shorter lengthes in pants. I also love the INC brand at Macy's and the choices at Nordstrom's. There are also a lot of on-line retailers that have a great plus-size choices like Kiyona and Igigi. Other retailers carry larger sizes, as well. For example, Boden goes up to a US 18. Just ordered some super cute stuff from them this week.
Also, chubbiness doesn't mean that you can't rock gorgeous shoes and accessories. Those make a big difference, in my mind. Happy shopping! |
| Eddie Bauer has a lot of nice (and less matronly looking than Land's End) plus size stuff. I'm a size 18 and find that the XXL stuff works as well as 2X (and it's priced a bit less). Good selection of jeans and tops; also work clothing. |
| there's a columnist at Glamour who writes about cute (mostly affordable) clothes for plus-size women - you might want to jump on their website and do a search. blanking on her name right now. |
| Talbot's Woman Petite |
Marie Claire has someone who does this too, her name is Ashley Falcon I think. |

Torrid has lots of nice things for the fashionable plus sized woman.
You didn't say how big you were, but Old Navy has up to size 20 iirc in store and plus sizes on their website. |
| OP - I was in your shoes and have just lost down to a size 10. I have lots and lots of things that are 14-16, all different brands. I have loads of it in the trunk of my car to giveaway - do you want it? Seriously. It took me hours and hours to shop for all of this and I don't have time to sell it so I was going to take it to goodwill. Post an email addy where you can be reached! |
| 12:19 here - also adding that my clothes are all petite sized...I'm 5'3". I will seriously give them to you! |
