Addicted to chocolate - eating myself into a sugar coma - how to stop?

Anonymous
I've always been a sugar addict, but lately it's out of control. I must have chocolate after every meal. Sometimes I skip meals just to have chocolate instead. Right now, I"m eating raisinetts by the pound. What do you do / say to yourself to keep from losing control of your cravings?

Switch to dark chocolate - over 70% cacao is less sweet and somehow satisfies the craving more quickly.

You are perhaps not eating enough slow-digesting foods, like whole grains and protein, which release energy for hours. Unbalanced meals comprised mostly of refined carbs (white flour pasta, white rice, sugar etc) will give you energy rushes and slumps. This will bring on a vicious circle since you eat more sugar when you are down.

Apart from nutrition, you could increase your exercise and get more sleep too.

This was going to be my suggestion. Lots of good nutrients in dark chocolate, too.

Yeah, but you are going to have to break that sugar craving too. It's an evil cycle. Do the dark chocolate switch and load up on protein in your regular meals.

Yep, protein and good carbs. Start with a good amount of protein at breakfast - one or two eggs or a serving of cottage cheese or nut butter - with some complex carbs - 100% whole grain english muffin or slice of bread and/or berries. Lunch should be meat, fish, or beans with veggies, salad and/or fruit and possible a serving of whole grains. Eliminate artificial sweetners.

If you're vegetarian, you should be sure to eat beans, pretty much every day. Nothing has stopped my sugar cravings like beans. Tofu, tempeh, seitan don't fill you up the way beans do. And eat lots of green vegetables - I mean LOTS. Small servings of healthy fats (nuts, avocados) are good, as is fruit. If you do grains, eat whole grains.

Ask your doctor to do either fasting blood sugar labs (first thing before breakfast) or an A1C test to see if your blood sugar is running high. You need to watch out for diabetes.

Sadly, I think the best thing to do is cut it out altogethr. Get it out of your house. Get it away from your work area. I find chocolate and sugar just make me crave more.

I agree with PP. I am currently on my second week of a low-carb diet. I have LOST my craving for sweet...and you can get (sort of good) sugar-free chocolate bars at Trader Joes and online at www.netrition.com, I don't eat more than a square or two.

Go cold turkey on the sugar and break the cycle of addiction. I'm convinced that a lot of people have "addictions" to sugar, alcohol, etc., because of way out of control blood sugar issues. Google it!
