Kids With Special Needs and Disabilities
| DC has some medical issues that require things like eating every few hours and being kept in in extreme temps. The principal recommended an SST. It seems kind of like a 504. Anyone have any experience? We have been getting lip service from the teacher and no real compliance thus far. She also told me that she thinks an SST is not necessary. Would it be adviseable to have a consultant? Again, we are not trying for services, just fairly minor accomodations (they already have 2 snacks and lunch, DC may need a few extra minutes or encouragement to eat). |

Yes - do the SST meeting - if nothing else to get it down on paper. It is the preliminary to anything else. Because your child has medical issues which affect her academic performance, the SST is the place to discuss this.
We have also had good experience with the school counselor. Of course, they vary, but they can be a good ally. Make an appointment. If the teacher isn't being helpful after these steps, ask for a change. |
