Is the term playdate still used in elementary school?

Daughter is getting ready to start K and I'm curious if the phrase "playdate" is still used when school age friends get together to play. Also, is it appropriate to invite school friends over when you don't know the families? We don't have any kids nearby, so I'm hoping to invite some of her new school friends over. Yet, I'm afraid the parents will think that it's strange to receive a playdate request from a family they don't know.

IMO, yes and yes. But I'd appreciate it if the first playdate were scheduled at a time when I could drop her off and spend 10-15 minutes getting to know the other parent.

Agree with PP. The term playdates still used and I would also appreciate the opportunity to spend a few minutes with a parent hosting my child for a play date for the first time. When my daughter was in KG, I actually invited new friends' moms to join us for the first visit - gave me a chance to make some new friends too. If she just drops off, be sure to ask about allergies and get her cell number in case of emergency.

It doesn't phase out until the kids are old enough to make the phone calls themselves.

When are they old enough to call kids themselves?

it starts to happen in third grade, and they still sometimes need help in fifth.
