How did you find your therapist?

I'm struggling and feel like im on the edge of getting upset constantly. I saw a counselor a few times through my school and when I was first postpartum tried to make an appointment but everywhere was busy. How do you find one your insurance will take that is a good fit? Did you just call through the list from your insurance website?

You will probably not find anyone through your insurance. When I was in your shoes I was given a student counselor. try calling psychological associations in your area and seeing what’s available.

I gave up on insurance coverage.

I found someone I liked on Psychology Today's website. They were at Sunstone in Falls Church, which is where I live. When I called, the intake person asked me what is important to me (that the therapist be experienced and not in training, and that they be female and have an interest in helping with trauma), and she matched me with someone else, who has turned out to be great. It was a relief. I've tried before and never found a good fit.

Also Psychology Today filtered for my insurance. Much better than the list from the insurance company on terms of availability for new patients.

You can filter by insurance, zip code, and issue(s). Then you read the profiles and figure out which one's vibes you like (and are accepting new patients).

I've always used people through insurance. I just cold call from the list. Each time, in the various areas I have lived my first try with a person I actually tried out in person was someone who worked out, but a lot of people didn't even call me back. I know that isn't common.

Sadly, yes. I think I’m paying $175 for 60 minute appointments (but they are actually the full 60 minutes—which I don’t think is usually the case).
