Spin-off of a different thread - I’m curious why neuroscience is so popular now. We’ve seen it as the declared major on a supervising number of the 2023 and now 2024 admits posts for our HS.
Is this just the new “pre-med”? What are kids doing or planning to do with this major after graduation? |
| Surprising. Not supervising. 😂 |
| Think of how many posts here are people asking why someone else did or said something. It’s reasonable college kids want to understand how the brain works too. |
|
It’s a good pre med school or science degree.
Also similar to a combo of biology and kinesiology and psychology. |
It is far more academically rigorous than Kinesiology which really only leads to physical therapy |
| It's interesting and there's now a sizeable enough research body that it is stands on its own rather than just as a part of psychology. Psychology has long been a popular major. |
| People love to crap on kinesiology programs, but they often have some of the same bio and Chem classes as those majors. Anyway, there’s overlap, since it’s dealing with the human body. |
They take the intro chem and bio classes, but not the upper level classes (300-400 level). That's why they're crapped on. It's more of a survey major with less depth and rigor. |

From my engineering college years there were more than a few electrical engineers who also had a minor in neuroscience.
I thought it was an interesting combination. |
| A lot of students pick a major they or their parents see as helpful for getting into medical school. |
| There are enough career pathways that make neuroscience a worthwhile major. But medical school or allied health programs are not the only options with a neuroscience degree. |
interesting, my DD wants to do engineer but also interested in medical school potentially....this would probably be a very hard major/minor--what type of engineering? |
oops-you did say EE,,,she is torn between ee, me or comp s |
| DD's two college roommates are Neuroscience majors. One is pre-med and the other one is interested in a future STEM career but is not too sure in what area. From what I can garner, they both like the mix of STEM classes and psychology classes. |
| It’s also an easy program for a small college to have. No major lab costs. |
