What is the most highly ranked school you’ve seen:
a 3.8uw private/high rigor get into? Humanities major 34 ACT Curious. |
| If a rigorous well regarded private, odds are good for something esp in the T15-30 range. |
|
Look at your schools Naviance.
Cornell/Emory/Vanderbilt/Wash U/USC could be good possibilities |
| Private school doesn't mean your kid has better odds for admission... it can work the other way. Grades can be inflated to appease the parents shelling out tuition money, and colleges want kids that aren't privileged in every way. Good luck to your kid, I just find the private school call out annoying. |
It matters because of the size of the school and competitive entry. No schools gives everyone straight As. So when you have competitive admissions, your lowest ranked kid at a private school is not the same as the lowest ranked kid at a public school. The scale is different. Believe people when they tell your their straight a student become a C student when they switched to private. They didn't get dumber, but they are at the bottom of a new and smaller group, so they get the Cs, even when they get 4s and 5s on AP tests and have 1400+ SATs. |
Agree. With those stats I've seen acceptances in these within last 3 years. |
| Previous poster... Also UMich |
| Definite admit to Chicago and WashU ED. |
| I don’t know where it’s ranked but I’d ED Tufts over Wash U or Emory. |
|
Agree with above.
UChicago def - ED preferred Michigan USC Wash U Vanderbilt (ED) Emory (ED) |
Agree with this as well. |
| I've seen Classics majors get into Yale, Princeton, Stanford. |
|
OP, the T20 schools generally have a single digit admit rate, so rather than ask about odds for one of those schools, your kid should think through the qualities of the schools do they favor and then develop a list of schools that share those qualities.
Big versus Small Urban versus rural What part of the country Semester versus quarter system specific majors or programs IOW, there is no planet where someone applies to Dartmouth, Columbia and Brown unless they are nae shopping. All different settings, different types of curriculum etc. |
| I've seen Cornell, Dartmouth and Columbia in this GPA range admitted unhooked (all different kids) in the last 2 admissions seasons. I'm not sure you could replicate this (I have a kid in this bracket who is not even trying) but it has been done. |
I’ve seen Cornell and Dartmouth for ivies. Also the other schools mentioned above for T25. Also, lots of other schools like Boston College, Carnegie Mellon, Barnard, Wellesley, Tufts, Georgetown & Claremont McKenna. There are lots of options. Evaluate ED1 and ED2 choices strategically. |
