Question is in the subject line, but also curious about whether or not they take public transportation, school-provided transportation, carpool, walk, drive, etc.
Also, what impact does commute time have on their after school activities and social life? |
| I went to private for high school. The school was 30 minutes from my house. The first two years I took the bus organized by the school that would drop off at a handful of fixed points (and not your home address). After that I drove myself. Kids hailed from all different areas. The first two years I did notice that kids tended to be more social with the kids who lived near them. That said, my parents did a fair share of picking me up at a friend’s house 40-50 minutes away. Once kids started driving, that all changed. Of course this was all pre-Uber days. |

There was literally a thread on this yesterday. No need for another one.

There is literally a thread on this every week!
I’ll sum it up for you: Some say it is soul crushing and not worth it. Others say it was worth it, got to spend quality time in the car with kid annd kid did homework during the commute. And, who doesn’t love The American Legion Bridge? |
| Asking how far and comparing it over an hour, not the same…. |
| Sheridan was a 4 minute drive / 20 minute walk. Sidwell was an 8 minute drive and a 30 minute walk. Yes, both schools totally worth the commute. |
Variations on a theme, but whatever. 20 min. Very worth it. Turned down the school that would have had at least 45 min each way, and the commute was one of the deciding factors. |
| 30-45 minutes each way regularly, can be 1 hour or more in traffic in the afternoon if there's a late activity. Had to make a lot of sacrifices like child had to quit one activity. Hard to say if it was worth it. Life would have been much less stressful for whole family if child had picked a school closer. |
| 4 miles away but it takes 20-25 minutes with traffic/lights. Totally worth it. I drive every day. No school transportation |
| Two miles, 9 - 10 minutes in morning traffic. After practices, in evening rush hour, anywhere from 12 - 30 minutes. |
| 5-6 minutes driving distance. We don't use school transportation. We like it. |
It's basically the same. You are just not bright and don't realize it. |
Did you really think the question, especially with the follow up question, "is it worth it?" was directed toward someone like you with a 5-6 minute commute? Are you in public school and the elementary school is on the corner? I don't think OP was talking to you. |
| If we walk, it's about 20 minutes, if we drive it's about 10 because morning rush hour traffic. |
Similar for us. Ds loved a school that was 40 minutes away without traffic. In the end it was just too far for us as a family to manage. He’ll be going to a school that’s about 20 minutes away instead. |
