What to do with frozen tart cherries?

Could they be too tart for a cherry pie? How else can I use them up? I hate to throw them out.

Mix into homemade ice cream, or make them into a syrup and use on ice cream or pancakes.

I also think it’s fine to use them in a pie. I prefer a more tart pie!

I'm assuming you've never made sour cherry pie? The tart cherries are supposed to be so tart to be inedible on their own but add plenty of sugar and you get a strongly tart-sweet pie. When done properly it is a fine thing to eat.

I love frozen tart cherries by themselves, put in microwave for 1 minute and just eat them, they are tart but they are also sweet to me

Pair it with something like an iced pound cake powered, sugar phyllo and bake (cherry turnover), or a crumble cobbler (with whip cream or vanilla bean ice cream).

Cherry crisp! You need tart cherries to balance the sweetness of the topping.

Make a quick sour cherry jam. Delicious just as jam, or if you want to do more with it you could bake it into a gateau basque.

Search for “cherry streusel bar” recipes. Lots of good options and one of the reasons we keep frozen cherries stocked!

A Cook’s Country one we prefer calls for cherry preserves too. Lidl’s version is an excellent value. The one at “Butter & Baggage” happens to be exact (without the attribution which I sincerely believe to be CC). Some recipes call for cherry pie filling (don’t do it!) or are for 8/9” square pan (not enough for our household!).

I like frozen tart cherries with cottage cheese or plain yogurt. They are also good mixed into oatmeal.
