Purdue vs VA Tech (Engineering)

Anonymous
Our DD was accepted at both Purdue University in Indiana and VA Tech in VA (both in Engineering). Though we've not yet heard anything back regarding financial support/scholarships, assuming that the final cost is approx. comparable, which one would be overall better, both in terms of rigor of study, campus life and prospects post-college?

Thank you.

Go with Tech if you are in-state for VA. If not, go with Purdue.

I would give a slight edge to Purdue, and I studied engineering for 7 years at Virginia Tech. Visit both and pick the one you like best based on vibe, cost, etc.

Both great schools but can’t argue the international name recognition of Purdue engineering. Top 10 program.

If leaning towards aerospace engineering, go with Purdue. If in-state, go with Virginia Tech

DC also admitted to Purdue, VA tech trying to decide we will visit Purdue late March. Mine lean to CS and it is direct admit at Purdue.

Even if costs are comparable, factor in travel costs getting your child to and from each place.

In the same situation, DC chose VT and is very happy there—we are OOS.

VT is direct-admit to engineering while Purdue is not. Look into it.

You didn’t raise it, OP, but my aerospace engineering kid had these choice plus GA Tech and UVA. He chose UVA (great engineering program! Don’t listen to the naysayers who don’t know what they are talking about) Anyhow, I raise it only because your DC should be in a place where they can transfer out should they decide to do so. Engineering is a tough major. Our DC switched out of aerospace engineering to college of arts & sciences at end of first year and is now in a T3 law school coming well. 80 percent of students change their major at least once. My advice is to pick a school that offers the most flexibility

End of story

My DS is a freshman in FYE at Purdue. Absolutely loves it. It’s hard but he works pretty hard too and felt his public HS really prepared him. He’s leaning toward mechanical. The aerospace program is probably most sought after and competitive to get into, followed by ME. Purdue no doubt has a great reputation for engineering. That said, your student should go with what feels right. They’re both incredible programs and incredible schools. Travel costs as someone mentioned should be taken into account. It can be pricey. Happy to answer more questions. Good luck!
