What schools do likely letters?

Anonymous
I have seen some stellar candidates receiving likely letters on College Confidential and am wondering what schools have not sent theirs out yet. Are they common? Curious about how that process works.

Do you mean for athletes? Are there other types of likelies?

No. Candidates who are very strong, who will likely get other acceptances and that the school wants to offer now in the hopes that they will accept. The idea is that you tend to like someone (or in this case not a someone but a school) that really likes you. If the student feels special by getting this early offer ahead of the regular decision day, they will be more likely to accept and attend.

Cornell sent out early acceptances yesterday. Some schools will send out a more tentative “likely” letter and others will send actual acceptances. Yale sent out likelies a week or two ago.

My DS’s experience: He received a likely from Swarthmore. He did not receive a likely from Williams or Bowdoin.

My DS received one from Middlebury but that's about it.

Is it the top 5 percent of acceptances or so that get likely letters? Or fewer than that?
