Have you joined parents Facebook groups?

Anonymous
While still deciding/waiting on schools?
Anonymous
No. And we didn't join after our kids went to their universities either.
Anonymous
I’ve joined some. Other groups will only allow parents who have signed a contract.

Yes, I've joined for my DD's current top three. Interesting info and definitely different personalities.
Anonymous
Yes, but it was a target school.

I haven't joined while a prospective. But I"m on one for my older dd. You should definitely join once your kid commits-- they're full of a LOT of complaining but also some useful info-- particularly if your kid doesn't share a ton and parents let you know a bit of what is happening, upcoming deadlines, etc.

If as a prospective parent, I guess the purpose would be to search the last two years to see what has been discussed. This would definitely tell you everything that is WRONG with the school -- these groups are full of many complaints. But take with a grain of salt. A very small % of parents who have strong personalities. (Of course, if you've been on DCUM for a while, you're used to that!)

You join after committing. Most won't even let you in before that.

No.

Your involvement will become less and less.

Just make sure your kid checks their email.

Yes after deciding and attending.

It’s very helpful for doctor recommendations and car repair recommendations.

Also it helped with questions like where to park for graduation etc

My sons roommate was in a significant car accident and a woman on the FB group went to the hospital until the mom arrived, my son appreciated her being there with him

I would never do this but some parents were like “I have nobody to tailgate with” … the son worked the tickets for the game and people invited them it wa so nice.

Ours requires proof of admittance and asks that parents leave if kid goes elsewhere.

I have joined the FB groups for the schools my daughter is admitted to. They have been helpful so far. I am only using them for some background info.

I am not on Facebook so no, but I have heard they are a great way to get info, so wondering if I need to join Facebook. I really don’t want to.
Anonymous
Not on Facebook so I didn’t for my DC who is sophomore. TBH, I don’t need that unnecessary drama.
But we did join the email distribution for parents and that’s been helpful to hear what’s going on at the school

What drama?

Are there shuttles from the airport? Is dramatic for you?

Don’t. Follow the university on Twitter or read your emails… which I find way more annoying.

Or disengage
