Dandruff and haircuts

I have a dandruff problem. I know it and my derm does too. We are working on it but it’s not been a quick fix. Unfortunately I’m dark haired and it shows though I do my best to ensure flake free.

I need a haircut but I’m embarrassed. Can I go? Is it gross or wrong to go?

Hairdressers have seen it all. If you have long hair, you could just go in with freshly washed wet hair. Use a scalp scrubber and your dandruff shampoo to get as many flakes off before hand. Then don’t worry about it.

Wash right before you go.

I assume you’ve tried different shampoos? I did well with Neutrogena T-Gel for many years until it stopped working for me. Then I switched to Nizoral and it’s been great ever since.

I have scalp psoriasis so I understand better than anyone how anxiety-inducing haircuts can be. But PP is right—hair stylists have seen it all. It still embarrasses me though. If I’m having a bad flare up, I usually mention it right away to my stylist just as a way of raising the issue. I might say “just to let you know, my psoriasis is bad today but it’s not a problem.” That way we avoid the awkwardness. A good stylist will not make a face or comment about it.

They don't care. They've cut a million people's hair that have dandruff. If you're concerned, jump in the shower. Comb your scalp as throughly as you can to remove as much scale a possible. Then clean your hair in the shower. Try it 2-3x. You'll get most out. There will be little flakes if you get your hair cut within the next 4-6 hours.

They see this virtually every day. Go and don't worry about it.
