How many 16 year old boys dating?

Anonymous
With all the talk about kids these days delaying/doing less dating I did not think I’d be having to worry about this at all until college! But here we are, 16 year old sophomore DS is now dating a girl he met at school. How common is this? More common in some circles than others? DS is an athlete, attractive, funny, and smart. I suppose those things help. The pandemic and some other things happening in the last couple of years were rough on him and I’m pleasantly surprised that he was able to connect with someone.

I never understand all the comments on here they don’t date. Plenty of them are dating and some start in middle school. From what I observe.

My DS sounds like yours and he just started dating for the first time as well. They met through a shared extra curricular but she lives in another town. I’m pleasantly surprised and happy for him. It’s only been a lot of talking (texting) for the most part yet, but I think the communication and relationship building is so healthy. He’ll turn 17 this summer.

Mine did for a couple of months last summer right before he turned 17. It didn’t seem like a very big deal to him and when it ended (she moved on to someone else) he didn’t seem particularly bothered. But I think he liked giving the whole dating thing a try.

More of my son’s friends are dating, then aren’t. He’s 16 in 10th grade.

It’s a huge thing to be coupled up at my kid’s high school.

but that's not good. we are talking about dating not "coupling" (sex)

It is totally common, and age appropriate to date at those ages! In my kids school lots of kids are “dating” in middle school (as in just a title, hanging out in groups and mostly in school), and really dating in HS (hanging out in each others houses and going to events as a couple).

I think there’s only 1 circle according to the moms here. Everyone is smart, attractive, athlete, all As. It gets kind of boring.

Our son started dating a girl freshman year, they were together for a little over 2.5 years (broke up during covid/junior year). We always thought they'd break up when they both left for college, but it didn't work out that way. It's fine

My son is dating a young woman he met through his sport. Mostly they text, sometimes hang out on weekends with friends or hang out with us here at the house. Get some pizza and put on a movie. It’s very laid back but he seems happy.

I would hope so!

My DS started dating at 16, a junior. I was actually happy about it because he was such a nerdy kid, and went through a really awkward stage up until 15. He was short, chunky, wore glasses and braces. He had a "glowup" as they say during covid at 15. And I guess the hormones hit other aspects of his life.

They broke up fairly quickly (a few months), and he was heartbroken But then a year later, he got another gf, and he's still with her (over a year).
