Cost to finish basement

Anonymous
Hi, we are looking to finish our 1500 sq ft basement, add walk up, kitchen, full bath, and finish a bedroom. What would be a reasonable estimate for this work in Fairfax? Could folks who have recently finished basements share their costs please?

its going to depend on the state of the basement, if you have exposed HVAC routes, if the ceiling is high enough or requires a dig down, existing windows or not. yada yada.

We recently did something similar and it was around $200k. Renovate bathroom, add exterior window, new windows, new floors, new kitchen, 2nd bathroom added, new floors, new lighting. We didn't really move any walls.

$200k sounds about right…

For our same size basement which will be a rec room, bedroom, workout room, one egress window, and full bathroom, we were quoted $100k. Yours is much more than that so I would expect it to cost at least $50k more.

A number of years ago my neighbor said she couldn’t get less than $30K.

It was relevant because my house was on the market for $600K and I ended up bidding $615K and winning. It has a finished basement. A few months later she got the same model a few houses down, without a finished basement for $600K and she was telling me I made the right move with my bid because she can’t finish her basement for what I paid.

I meant to say hers was without a finished basement

Ours was $150, built our 4 rooms, but no kitchen.

100K for ours similar features as you described.

Thanks all, very helpful. I guess the excavation cost adds significant additional cost for us. Ours is an underground basement without a slope. Thoughts on ROI of making it a walkout basement vs not?

lol. you can’t just snap your fingers and have a walk-out basement. If the ROI was good every single new build would have a walk-out basement. If you don’t live on a hill you don’t have a walk-out basement.

+1
Every house on my side of the street has a fully below-grade basement. The street slopes away on the other side so every house across us has a walkout basement. We just added egress windows.

how much does it cost to add an egress window
