Thoughts on Severna Park High School

Anonymous
My job will be bringing me to the Fort Meade area. I have two highschooler and am shopping schools. From what I can tell on every online school site Severna Park looks like the best school in AA county. What you guys say? I see houses are higher priced than other area…is it worth it?

My kids are at Meade in the IB program (also our home school.) We have been very happy with Meade. However, if your kids aren't used to being the minority, they may not be happy. My kids (white) have always been the minority at their schools and thus have friends from all races, ethnicity, economic backgrounds, etc. They have found friends who are hardworking, fun, and push each other without being demoralizing.

From what I can tell Severna Park is a pressure cooker of a HS. Yes, it is top performing, but that also comes with a price.

I went to Severna Park High School and “pressure cooker with a price” is accurate. During my 4 years there, there were 3 suicide attempts and one suicide. It’s high pressure to preform in sports and also academically. That said, I am successful. I did well in college and am doing well in my career. Please pay attention to your kids’ mental health.

^^ perform, not preform. I promise I learned how to spell.

NP but I also went to SPHS around the same time PP did too with the suicides. It is not diverse and the food options are more limited in the area. Bullying seems to still be a problem per the other SPHS thread. However, it can set your kids up for success if they do well.

I graduated SPHS a few years ago. Read online about the Field Hockey Team incident in 2017. There are definitely problems in that school. There were numerous complaints about an administrator bullying the girls and they moved him to another school. I just heard from my parents that he is back at the school. That man should never be allowed around children.

Severna Park is a good school academically, it is however plagued with a lack of diversity and unwillingness to properly address racially motivated incidents. There are plenty of news articles that address the administration's bullying, sexism, and racism.

The problem is not Severna Park Schools. The problem is the Anne Arundel County Public School Board. The lackluster administrators in many of the schools don't face accountability. They constantly get shuffled around, when something goes wrong in hopes that it goes away.

See the new Malcolm Gladwell book, Revenge of the Tipping Point, Chapter 3.

Can you give any synopsis

Severna park is wealthy and beautiful but a bit isolated. I would also look at two rivers, Crofton, and davidsonville, all great schools.
