Moving from MCPS to Maryland Dept of Juvenile Services?

Anonymous
I noticed that Noyes children center in Rockville is going to reopen to work with girls waiting for court trials and other placements.

Does anyone here a have any direct experience?

Will my pension in MCPS supplemental/Maryland transfer over?

I have experience in facilities with similar students, but any more unique situations? I assume these are very short term placements and my goal is to just keep them up until return to a home school.

Are all classes co-taught? Is security and expectations high?

It's DCUM; we just want to throw away the key.

Some kids need this setting good or bad.

Hmmm....I don't think there are mcps teacher positions at noyes, right? The mcps supplemental pension is unique to mcps and doesn't transfer to other postions....you would still get it if you're tenured but at a much smaller payout on retirement. I also don't know what kinds of teachers they have at short term detention centers. Are they subcontractors vs. state employees? I have previously worked with students who have been at Noyes and no one had positive things to say about it, but, really...who would want to be
there.

I think you’d have to ask someone who works there. I know that RICA has school employees that are MCPS employees and medical/therapy staff that are state employees - wonder if Noyes might be similar.

Hi, could you show me where that's been published? I can't find it. I don't doubt you, just that it's news to me.

The physical facility is in very poor shape. Although I don't know if they have been rehabbing it over the past year or so. If it's a state job, the pay is poor compared to anything in MCPS and Montgomery County government. Historically the turnover at the facility had been high. But because the pay was so poor, people were commuting in from much further distances, and eventually got tired of the commute and transferred out when transfers were available. Some directors were strong. Some weren't. In the past, it had been very difficult to get school records in any timely manner. And if a child were only there for 7 days, that child usually missed out on any instruction because school records hadn't transferred.

Girls are very complex, and when they are in the juvenile justice system, it almost always means they have multiple traumas and no support. If you are already familiar with that, then bless you. It's a demanding job, and the rewards are few.
