Book Recommendations for tweens/ teens

Anonymous
I’m trying to get DD, 12 ( almost 13) to read more but I always have to ask her to do so. It almost feels like reading is a chore instead of an enjoyable activity. A big part of this is that she doesn’t have any books that she currently enjoys.

Does your tween/ teen have any favorite books / book series/ authors that they really enjoy? Any recommendations are welcome. Thanks.

Have you tried going to the library and have her talk to librarian or browse? Picking out your own books make a huge difference. I hated being told what to read by the school as a teen.

If she's into Star wars they have junior novels for each of the later movies with Ray and Kylo.

My kids are older now, but here are some you might consider:

Ally Carter
Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase
Keeper of the Isis Light
Interworld by Neil Gaiman
Fairest by Gail Carson Levine
Tuck Everlasting
The Westing Game
Hidden Talents by David Lubar
Island of the Blue Dolphins
E.D. Baker
Trixie Belden
Agatha Christie

It might be helpful if you could tell us anything about her preferences, even if it’s TV shows or movies? Does she like fantasy, mystery, sci-fi, romance, etc? Here are some lists of tween books broken down by category that you might find useful.

Asking her to read does sound like it’s a chore. Even though reading is intrinsically enjoyable, if she feels compelled to read, it will cease to be enjoyable for her. Here are some other tactics you might try:

If it’s a lack of books that she enjoys, can you take her to a library or used book store do that she can browse and pick her own? In Montgomery County, the Friends of the Library stores are excellent.

She’s not too old to be read to. Pick a book that you’d both enjoy and read together. It doesn’t have to just be at bedtime. She can even be doing something else (crafts, eating, puzzles, etc., while you’re reading to her). Don’t aim for “literature”, just something that will hook her. Or, just start sharing small bits - a funny passage in a book you’re reading yourself, an article or part of an article that you think she’d like. You might try an audiobook in the car.

Do you spend time reading for your own enjoyment? You might sit down to indulge in a book, offer to read to her if she wants, and if she declines, go ahead and read your book for your own pleasure.

I’m assuming that your daughter doesn’t have any problems reading, but if you suspect she might, then you might want to have those checked. It’s hard for anyone to enjoy something that’s a struggle.

No, unfortunately my teen won’t read either. She used to love reading, a true bookworm!

My non reader loved manga at that age - they generally are higher level concepts and vocabulary compared to the more grade school interest graphic novels

Just be aware that though they may look like comic books, some manga is intended for adults, and isn’t appropriate for a 12 year old.

My 13 yo really liked The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. It’s a 4 book series. Fantasy-ish. A few of her friends were reading them too.

Love love love The Book Mommy's recommendations! She is in Alexandria and posts on all sorts of books.

She's been a Godsend to our family and has helped match both kids (with very different reading preferences) to books they love. She gives incredibly thoughtful reviews to a wide variety of books. Good luck on finding the right fit for your reader!

Mine is plowing through all the dystopian young adult fiction series. Hunger Games was the gateway, Maze Runner is the current fave.

What is she doing instead of reading at those times you want her to read? Maybe books about favorite hobbies, sports, or movies would appeal.
