Can we discuss Tan France?

He looks bad and he makes the people he dresses in Queer Eye look equally weird and bad.
I like him as person but this bothers me. I feel like the rest of the team are adding value whereas he is like 'oh I see you're a straight man, please enjoy these high waisted cropped paperbag waist pants and bowling shirt'.
no.

I really like him - I just think it’s a tall order to actually style so many people of different sizes and personalities. Most stylists have a shtick or niche. So to repeatedly dress so many people is just stretching his expertise a bit too far. Kind of the problem with most of the queer eye guys. So I just take it all at face value and enjoy it.

I don’t think any of the guys on that show have very good style or taste.

They do mostly seem genuinely nice and caring though. Or they’re just good enough actors to come off that way.

Is Antoni's value being eye candy while showing someone how to put canned soup in the microwave?

Tan's adding value by getting most of these people to try on something different than the uniform they've been wearing forever. Even if the outfits aren't all amazing, the reminder that different clothes exist is important for the participants. One guy said he hadn't walked inside a store in 15 years!

I usually like the stuff Tan puts them in. Modernizing but still keeping with their style.

He makes terrible outfits. He's putting his wacky taste onto his "clients"(?) , and not considering what would make them elevated or different in a tasteful way. Bowling shirt is about right.

We never actually got to see him work!

I think Tan does a really nice job for people overall. He gets them clothes that fit, that are several steps up from what they wore before. I'd like to know how many of them keep it up - but I like his work. I think JVN does a nice job, too. Antoni certainly knows how to make a salad and wear a shirt. I loathe Karamo, however.

+1 Karamo is useless. Go back to The Real World.

Is it just nostalgia, or am I right in thinking the original iteration was so much more effective in what they actually did for people?

I think the newer version is much more about spotlighting noteworthy people, or people who are connected to important causes, and tacking the QE "take some time to practice self-care" angle onto their story. I still enjoy it, but the premise seems to have shifted a bit.

The beauty of what Tan does is building a new wardrobe of mix and match things they might not think of otherwise. He teaches about proportion and combining. However, not everyone needs a jacket to layer in warm places… That’s the one thing I don’t get. It’s not always climate appropriate. I love when he gets them new glasses. That’s a nice touch and I’m guessing they get a fresh prescription as well.
