My youngest just started kindergarten and I’d like to go back to school to be a psychologist. I have a MS in neuroscience and some college-level psychology courses. (My initial goal was to be a psychiatrist, but I don’t have the energy for med school and all that follows).
There don’t seem to be a lot of clinical psychology programs around. I was interested in Georgetown, but they only offer a job-clinical PhD. I’d like something with a good reputation. I’m open to an online program from a respectable institution. Thanks for any suggestions! |

Do you want a PhD or a PsyD? Or do you want a masters in mental health counseling or social work? I can answer questions!

Thank you!! I would like to do clinical work and I’d like to get a doctorate, so probably a PsychD. |

Would an online MSW from a good school be better than a PsyD from a mediocre school?

| I’m not sure why, but many PsyD programs are very expensive and not terribly credible. The worst are the for-profit school programs. Pay particular attention to a school’s student placement history in APA-approved internships. |

Did you look at GW?

This program has a good reputation and I know someone who is happy there. |

The strong clinical PhD programs in the are are: UMD, American, Catholic U, and GW. I'm in the field and folks in the area know these to be strong programs. USUHS has a good program, but it's more military-focused I think. UMBC's clinical PhD program is also quite good if you're willing to go to Baltimore.
There aren't as many strong PsyD programs in the area. I'd say Loyola in Baltimore might be one to consider. |
