UVA Data Science (new undergraduate BS)

Anonymous
Heard a lot about UVA’s new data science school when we toured, and it looks like the new major was approved a few months ago, the building is set to open in <100 days, and current first-years can apply now for what’s described as a “three-year program” for data science. Having difficulty learning more than that for non-engineering stem kid interested in UVA. Applying in first-year makes it unlike the usual major declaration at end of second year, which is also when selections are made to undergrad Comm school (I think?).

It’s an interdisciplinary major with math, CS, etc., it looks like, but degree would be from School of Data Science, I.e., would transfer out of CLAS? Double major between two schools possible given that a lot of courses are already hosted in other schools? Is transfer in first year the only way to do the major? Do they have the faculty to build out yet or relying on faculty in other programs, etc.?

FAQ for new BSDS below: must apply/switch to school of data science after first year for the major, can double major with something in college of arts & sciences, can minor with other schools. Requires two DS pre-reqs in first year—remaining math, CS, etc. courses to complete major still unclear, but looks like there will be several pathways within the major.
