DS is a 12 year old who plays multiple field team sports. He is known for his speed on those teams (fastest or among the fastest).
I hand clocked his 100M and 400M times on the tracks with regular tennis shoes and they are 15 sec and 1m10s respectively. Are there any track athletes here and can put these times into perspectives? I assume these are just general fast times but not that impressive in the eyes of track athletes. |
| I know nothing about the 100m but the 400m time is not fast. |

For boys in HS, competing in the 100m- "good times" are between 10-13 seconds.
For the, 400- 50-57 seconds |
| if you go to va.milesplit.com- you can look at results from last spring's HS meets. |
| Was he racing anyone? That makes a big difference on longer races. But also, can't tell anything at age 12. Good 100 times are in the 11s. Good 400 times are low 50s. State champs run high tens and high 40s. |
| Here's results from a local meet last year. The ages are for 31 Dec. of the year-- so if your kid turns 13 in 2024, they'd be 13 for track. |
This is for girls and boys right.... for boys 100 10.4-11.2, 400 47-49 |
For 12 I would say the 100 time is a bit slow... would look for something in the 13 to be good... for the 400 I would say anything closer to 1 min... But it is still early, probably those teams say that because your son is quick. In the 100 you have to learn how to accelerate to top speed and maintain top speed as long as possible for the 400 that is a different situation that takes heart. who am I... I coach elite high school athletes for years at an inner-city school... Coach multiple kids under 10.6 and also 48.5 |
I am thinking of competing in JV as a freshman. |
| Thank you. Helpful feedback. |
I ran 56 seconds as a 12 year old in the 400. Ran 52.5 as a freshman in high schoo and 48.5 400 as a high senior, and 4:06 for the mile in the 70's also as a high school senior. Compare as you wish. My brother was faster - 4:08 for a mile in 10th grade and I never felt like I was anywhere near the fastest kid around. Never ran the 100 - ran sub 23 for the 200. |

OP my 11 year old is similar - athletic, considered fast on his team sports. He ran a sub-14 at 10 in his sneakers and with no track specific training. No idea what his 400 meter time would be. I suspect it wouldn’t be terribly fast as his biggest strength is his quick acceleration. I don’t think he could sustain the speed beyond 200 meter.
So I would agree with the coach above that your sons times are a bit on the slow side for serious track athletes. BUT, I do think training would improve that time massively. FWIW, I’m curious too how much my kid can improve so am considering putting him in track this spring as cross training for his team sport. |
Oh -- he should be fine! The events he'll compete in will depend on the team's needs. There's also the 200, which is good for the really speedy kids. The 800 is a tough race but great for those with a little more endurance than raw speed. The coach will put him where he needs him. |
I can outrun your boy and I’m a 52 year old out of shape white man |
