I’m making choc chip cookies and asked my spouse to grab some choc chips at the store. He got milk choc. Will it ruin the cookies? |
Yes |
It’s fine. I always use milk chocolate. |
In what way are you worried that it would ruin the cookies? Milk chocolate is sweeter and creamier, but it’s still a chocolate chip. I usually use a mix of dark and milk chocolate chips. Adjust the sugar if you are worried about the added sweetness |
We always use milk choc chip and they taste and look great |
Is this for real? |
How old are you that you have this little experience in the kitchen/life?
I sometimes substitute butterscotch chips or m&ms in my recipe. It’s fine. |
Thanks! |
To those who are snarky, I was trying to recreate the same cookie cake I’ve made for my kid’s birthday that I’ve made every year for 2 decades. Sorry - I thought some people would know if they’d taste similar. Clearly I know you can use any chip but i didn’t know if it would be too sweet.
To the rest of you normal responders - thanks! |
I hate the way milk chocolate tastes in cookies, and I have a massive sweet tooth and otherwise always prefer milk chocolate to dark chocolate. I also love M&M cookies. I am surprised that so many commenters think milk chocolate in cookies is just as good! I learned something new.

+1. I think milk chocolate chips are way too sweet in cookies and do not consider them a replacement at all. Get the semi sweet, OP! |
Then why didn’t you add this context to your original question? You can’t be surprised by the snark when you ask such inane questions. |
this poor spouse |
I wouldn't use all milk if your recipe calls for bittersweet chocolate.
My go-to recipe uses chopped chocolate, not chips, and a mix of white, milk and dark chocolate. |
I want to add that the spouse’s purchase was not in vain. Milk chocolate chips are delicious by themselves. ![]() |
