I just received a text message indicating that W&M was extending their regular decision deadline to January 12th (from January 5th). Does this extension mean that W&M did not get enough applicants? I wanted my daughter to apply (my alma mater), but unfortunately, they do not offer the program of study that she is interested in. |
This is usually a standard marketing move. The name of the game is to get as many applications as possible. Sometimes we think this holistic, change-making, idealist pursuit of ideas crapola actually is true.
More applications for the same number of seats increases selectivity. Selectivity drives more applications because prestige w*hores are among us. Rinse, repeat, welcome to higher education, brother. |
+1. this. also it could mean simply that W&M thinks it has the staff to handle more applications. |
I thought that W&M already had more than enough applications that an extension wouldn't be necessary. |
I know their goal is to drop the acceptance rate to at least 30%, maybe this is a means to accomplish it. |
They do. They just want to turn away more people. |
Ick. |
Curious, since they had another record number applying for EDI.
Guess they are sending this just out to select people, because I cannot find it on their admission website or Instagram pages? |
OP here - the message came in the form of a text message from a W&M. Last night (on the 5th), I received a text reminding me that that was the last day for Early Decision II and Regular Decision. Then today, I got a text stating that the regular decision and Early Decision II was extended to January 12th. We did tour the school last spring so maybe that's how they got my number. Honestly, I think its a great school, but unfortunately they don't have my daughter's major. |
I hate this. Another school my kid applied to did this. An admissions officer told me that they had a record number of applicants- 30% more than normal. Before that, I figured they must have been under. Definitely ick. |

Hm, could it have to do with their new initiative? https://news.wm.edu/2023/12/04/william-mary-partners-with-virginia-high-schools-to-expand-access/ i know our DD HS22 had a few colleges do that too, but she had already submitted by the original deadline. Will be interesting to see if they provide any reasoning why they decided to do that this year. |
I would not believe just a text. It would also have to be in an email. |
OP again - I just checked with my daughter and she did receive an email as well. It looks like the school had my phone # but her email. The subject line reads " There's still time to apply to W&M" and it confirms the extension date to January 12th. The email also asks to fill out a survey if she decides to not apply. |
I received several of these from schools that we’d earlier considered and didn’t end up applying to (they were our the common app portal but not submitted). Northwestern , u Chicago, and others. |
