| Have the cash to buy any car under 50k. I want something SUV or CUV size (probably CUV), reliable, economical. I would prefer to buy a used 20-25k car but not if it’s vastly inferior to a new 40k car. Should I just go new? Leaning towards a rav4 variant. |
| We have bought new Toyotas instead of used because they keep their value too well. The used prices are too high for the high mileage in our opinion. |
| New ones have all the new safety features which older ones may not have. I really like them, like the alarm when you veer out of your lane. We got a new Rav4 in 2021, paid cash. |
| I bought a new Toyota two years ago a month before prices went haywire and am getting ready to sell, I’ll break even. Drove the thing for two years for $0. At the time I planned on buying used but the dealer showed me a new one on the lot for the same price. I probably wouldn’t buy a Toyota or Honda used unless it’s 5+ years or prior to a redesign, you’re not saving that much at all. |
| I just sold my 2020 RAV XLE, with 65k miles on it, for $25k. It's madness, considering a brand new XLE will run you in the $33-36k range, I'd say absolutely emphatically NOT worth it. |
| Nope, there are so many suckers out there willing to buy your 3-5 year old Toyota or Honda for $5k less than new. |
|
In general Toyotas are bad to buy used. New cars with historical low depreciation are great to buy new but used not so much.
New cars with high Depreciation are better used cars buy. |
| Buy a used Mazda or Subaru, but a new Honda or Toyota. |
|
No, it is not.
Please pay cash for new. I don’t want to be the only one who does this. The dealership will hate you forever but it’s worth it. |
| Why do people buy used for almost the same amount? Is the interest rate better? (I only pay cash for cars so I don't understand it) |
Because they cannot afford to spend another $5K to get the new version. These are legit working-class or middle income people, not "DCUM middle class." They are saving $5K but sacrificing the fact that they would get a few extra years of service with a new car before repair bills. My guess is that they hope to flip it to someone else before the repair bills come due. |
| We just bought a new Honda CR-V for cash. There just didn't seem to be enough savings on a used car plus it was recently redesigned and I wanted the newer version. I'll likely keep it 15+ years given how much I drive + how reliable they are so I wanted to get exactly what I wanted. |
Why do dealerships hate people who pay cash? |

I bought a ‘99 RAV with 37k miles on it in 2005 for around $11k. MSRP new was $17 and change.
I’m still driving it 19 years later, currently has 212000k miles on it and just will not die. I have no complaints about my used Toyota experience. |
