I’ve been dying my own hair successfully for years, but the brand I usually use has been discontinued. I tried a new brand and it wasn’t good. What are some good brands for black dye?
I have been using Revlon ColorSilk for years. Even though it's one of the least expensive dyes, it covers better and lasts longer than more expensive brands that I've tried. I use Dark Brown #30 and I'm sure you know with the darker colors that you need to leave it on the longest amount of time, usually 25-30 minutes. Those 10-15 minutes dyes are no good for dark shades unless you want it to wash off in 3 days.
That's like asking the best thing at McDonalds.
I use Clairol Natural Instincts semi-permanent dye and leave it on for 45 min-1 hour, darkest brown.
Same! I have gone through all the box hair colors, and for me, this is the one that works best on my somewhat resistant grey. |
I use Ion brand from Sally’s. My hairdresser recommended it over the Clairol that I had been using.

I've been using Madison Reed. I think it actually looks pretty similar to what my super expensive salon hairdresser was doing. But maybe I'm trashing my hair without knowing it.
I use the light brown ashy -- I don't think my hair is very ashy, but the other shades ran too orange on me. I think light brown is a little harder to get right than dark brown or pure blonde. |
Madison Reed from Ulta. Darkest brown i think. Or maybe brown/black.
Ugh too messy. Just go to your salon! That is worth paying for.
Madison Reed as well. Moderna Brown for my darker hair. I initially had it done at the Madison Reed but I am too lazy and too grey to keep going in. Sometimes Target has it for almost half off. I keep it in my Target online cart so I am alerted when there is a sale on it. Madison Reed also has semi permanent kits for just grays but I didn't like that one as much because there weren't as many color choices.
plus several for madison reed.
