OG or phonics tutor for an early elementary student?

Is your child bribable? Will they sit down and work for you for 15 to 20 minutes if they get screen time or a reward afterwards?

The absolute best way is to tutor your child EVERY day for 20 minutes. It is way more effective than once a week or twice a week tutoring. Think about it if you are paying a tutor $75 an hour once a week that is $300 a month. My kid hated doing the reading lessons because it was hard for him but was really motivated for prizes. I had him pick things on amazon and then paid him $2 a day. So over a month that was $120 so still way cheaper than the tutor and with the tutor he would have spent 240 minutes (once a week for an hour- if he lasted an hour) on reading instruction but with me 20 minutes a day, every day it was 600 minutes of individual instruction. The reason we did it literally every day was it became like brushing your teeth. When we started doing it only a few times a week it was easy for him to say he didn't feel like it or I was too tired after work.

The cheapest way to start is to buy Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy lessons because the blending activities are fantastic. Your child practices saying words slow then fast so they get the idea of blending. Well worth the $16

If that isn't working then move on to All About Reading, which is an Orton Gillingham based multi-sensory program. It is about $200 for the Level 1 kit plus magnets and a box to put cards into. Even if you can't get your child to work then this is fantastic material for a tutor to use.

My son had ear tubes and speech therapy as a preschool so he was at a huge risk of having dyslexia. His phonemic awareness was awful when we started. He couldn't rhyme or blend. We started with 100 easy lessons then switched to All About Reading about half way through. He worked through levels 1-2 then we switched to another program to mix it up.

Check out Kids Up Reading Coaches. They do an intensive intervention to get your son or daughter caught up as quickly as possible. All on Zoom, which makes the scheduling a lot easier.
