Reid issues statement giving more details on the data breach.

Anonymous
The statement posted by Reid to the FCPS website has a dedicated email for parents and a very different tone than the letters mailed.

Reid's statement states:

The parent who inadvertently received this information has confirmed to FCPS that she will not share unredacted or individual student information publicly. The parent has a blog where she shares her views on educational matters, including on FCPS. Based on a review of that blog, the parent has not shared any individual student information. Instead, she has redacted (blacked out) student names

There is contact information for parents who received the letter:

"... If you received a letter from FCPS stating that your child may have been impacted by the inadvertent breach and have questions, please email privacy@fcps.edu. A staff member will be back in touch with you as soon as possible..."

This is why I've opted my kid out of all these questionnaires. I don't trust FCPS with this stuff. No way.

FCPS is a bunch of bullies. They knew the full story months ago and have decided to get everyone riled up about the parent instead of their total lack of oversight on data (and lots of other things).

No, they are highly incompetent (at least many of the folks at Gatehouse, I'm not talking teachers/staff). They should have known the kind of uproar this letter release would cause and they botched it. They didn't provide clear info to the impacted families and they are rightly getting heat for it. And now they're trying to stem the flood of complaints and they'll likely botch that, too. Good luck getting timely info from that contact link they provided.

That's separate from parents getting rightly pissed at Callie.

People are riled up by the parent’s own actions, not what FCPS did.

how much will FCPS compensate the victims? I am hoping at least 40k+ each for pain suffering and to move to private school.

Yeah, no reasonable adult needs a school system to "rile them up" against someone who has taken all their kids' private information and whose response is I'm going to keep it, share it, and use it without your consent you're supposed to trust me with it now. I think there are pretty clear grounds to blame Oettinger all on our own.

This has to be a troll. There will be no compensation from FCPS. I do think affected families should file a class action suit against this women, however.

This thread is not about that woman. She already has a thread and several facebook threads.

This is just to pass on Reid's statement, as it clearly was not disseminated in the same way as the original letter, even though it contains more information and a very important dedicated email address for parents of affected kids.

Based on my experiences in the public school system, this kind of information availability is the rule, not the exception. I'm glad someone spoke up.

I'm fine with her speaking up. No problem with that at all. I'm not fine with her keeping all of this private data without consent. She also says she won't share it publicly, but does that mean she's sharing it privately?

Did the parent share her own child's "redacted" information online as well or did she remove her own child's listing completely before posting?

I don’t see any identifiable information on her website at all.

This is the Faustian bargain of filing FOIA. What do you do with the information when you get it.

In another thread someone posted a link I found very problematic. No kids names, but lots of school/teacher/lawyer names you could use to figure out identities if you had a bit of local knowledge. Detailed info for example about cost awarded for specific treatment/placement.
