One reason why I put the private school sticker on my car.

Anonymous
My hope is that when I pull into the parking lot at the Giant, the person parking next to me will not look at me, eyes widening in fear, and "beep beep" activate the alarm on their car. Or better yet, they will reconsider walking around their Mercedes, tugging on the door handles, to make sure it's locked.

My vision is---their eyes will widen in fear, but they will see the window sticker. They will think "My goodness, anyone who has a child attending xxx school, although they are obviously an ethnic minority, perhaps they have a job and a mortgage, and perhaps they are not going break into my car and steal my diet coke and Wayfarers."

No, it hasn't worked yet.

Never, never, never. Its just too gauche. I'm a minority too, but I don't do it for the same reason I don't wear any clothing with designer logos.

are you sure that people are doing this because of you, and not because of all the "other" people in the Giant parking lot?

Depends on the car you drive, and how well you make it shine..

Fears of what the person pulling in next to me imagines I think of them will not stop me from enacting my decades-long habit of locking my car (until it beeps) and checking the doors when I leave it in a parking lot (or in a garage or on the street in front of my house).

Amen.

They probably think you stole the sticker. Or the car.

Plenty of shady white people in Giant parking lots. I agree, this isn't about PP. I'm not sure she really thinks it's about her, either. Maybe another DCUMer trying to stir up a fuss with the potent combination of race and private schools.

Wow, OP.

Maybe it's time to have a little therapy and let go of some of that suppressed anger.

Haven't you noticed that most people around here are in their own little worlds and probably not even registering who they're looking at or what they're doing? Just on automatic pilot while glancing once in your direction?
I was waiting at the bank the other day, thinking about a major health issue I have and realized I was staring at the person across from me. Not seeing them, that's just where my eyeballs had stopped while I was contemplating surgery or medication.

Sh*& happens - get over it.

OP's post supports my suspicion that people who have private-school stickers on their cars have something to prove. DC goes to a private school that we love. I am proud of DC's having gotten accepted. However, we wouldn't dream of putting a school sticker on the car. We also don't wear our clothing labels on the outside so that they show.

I must admit, I hate the sticker, but put it on my car out of a sense of obligation - to prove to the other parents at the school that I love the school as much as they do. Craziness ...

In our case, it was our kids who wanted to see "school pride" or some such thing. And mommy's car wasn't enough. Daddy had to get one, too. Our children are very young elementary schoolers. When they get older we will teach about "showing off." For now, we leave it at not talking with anyone about what they, and we, do and don't have.

i don't care about bumper stickers. I do think its weird when parents where clothes - hats, sweatshirts, with their kids' schools' logos. It's one thing if they are alumni but most are not. The school i see this the most with is Landon.
