| My 17 yo has stopped growing so I want to buy him his first “good” suit. He is short, with an athletic build, ie wide shoulders and a slim waist. What brands are good for this? My DH thinks that Brooks Brothers is made for more beefy men and the suit jackets then are too wide at the bottom when they fit at the shoulders. Thoughts? |
| I’ll be following this. Looking to get 17 year old senior a suit. Thinking Nordstrom Rack. Could be hit or miss though. |
| Go to Macys. |
+1 I find Macys has the best sales. |
| lol. BB is for beefy men. It's not like you order a suit like a value meal at McDonald's. Brooks brothers have actual tailors who alter suits to fit you. |
| A 17 year old still has a lot of room to grow, even if not up. H&M has serviceable suits if you aren't sure he is done growing. |
|
Suit Supply.
The most important thing is tailoring a cheap well fitted suit will always look better than an expensive ill fitted one. |
|
Wait until he needs a suit for an occasion and buy it then. At that point, go to wherever has a sale and buy one at Macys, Jos A Banks, JCP, Brooks Brothers or whatever is in your price range.
The suit he wears at 17 won’t be the same one he wants or can fit into at 28 or 35 anyway. If nothing else, styles will change. |
| Spend as much as you want, but understand he won’t get much use out of this suit bc occasions too wear it over next few years will be limited and he will fill in and styles will change. |
| Macys, Mens Warehouse, or Nordstroms. Agree you should not over invest in something too pricey. Even if he's not gaining height, his shape is very likely to change and fill in in the next few years. Get the tailoring. |
| Men’s Wearhouse did alright; J.C. Penney has decent stuff and good sales, but you’ll probably need an outside tailor. Agreed with PP’s that the useful life of a young man’s suit tends to be shorter than its physical life, at least for the original owner. But try to avoid being steered to excessively tight, tapered “style” suits or the ones with the dreadful jackets cut so short that they might as well be a waistcoat. Try to have the kid wear a shirt and tie and dress shoes when being fitted. It really makes a difference. |
| Just did this for 16 year old. Macy's is the answer. |
| Bonobos? |
| Brooks Brothers is a great option. Not for “beefy” men. |
| Target is the best choice for a very basic suit that costs a fraction of what you would pay at any other local store. In the mall, Macy’s is definitely the best option for boys in terms of selection, with cheaper prices than other stores. Even better, look at Amazon. You may find better quality than Macy’s for less money and of course much better selection. |
