DS12 is in a small private school. We are zoned for Tilden MS and for a variety of reasons are considering making the switch. However, DS has executive functioning deficits and I worry he won't be adequately supported in a large public school environment. Does Tilden MS have supports in place for kids with EF deficits? Would he need an IEP to access them or would a 504 be sufficient?

| Typically a 504 would cover this. What does his therapist say? |
| You will not get good supports anywhere in FCPS. And it will be a fight to get anything minuscule that you do get. |
Tilden has the most supports of any middle school. https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/tildenms/departments/academicsupportcenter/programs/ |
Lucky for OP they are in MCPS |

My ADHD kid is in MCPS and the only supports he gets is extra time.
Are ADHD students in MCPS really getting executive functioning support? I would love to hear details if so. |
A resource class can do it, but you'll need to stay on top of your kid and the staff to make sure they use it appropriately. My kid had a great experience in Tilden's resource - got really organized and learned to chunk. Still struggles with initiation, but everything is ready to go when they are. |
No. Teachers are just told to give ADHD kids preferential seating, extended testing time and frequent breaks. |
You need a resource class for more support. |

My DS is in 8th grade and has had a full-time 1:1 paraeducator since 2nd grade. He has ADHD and anxiety but no learning disability (he's actually in advanced classes in Math, English and Humanities). His IEP plans included faded support from the 1:1 paraeducator which happened in 7th grade (when he required no paraeducator support anymore). He has a class called Resource where kids can catch up on missed homework or get ahead of doing the homework meant to be done at home or after school.
What I found helpful was a pretty strong IEP. We used Weinfeld Education Group (Rich Weinfeld specifically) to help us navigate the IEP process which helped us succeed over these years. The support my son has gotten because of his IEP was fantastic. I highly suggest that you contact Weinfeld Education Group for a consultation. Best of luck. |
Another vote for Resource class for EF support at Tilden. Exponential progress in our DC from 6th to 8th. |
| Thanks for this information on the resource class at Tilden. It sounds helpful for EF supports. Does it meet every day? |
Resource class is a holding pen for kids who don't want to do their homework. It's hardly a place where student will learn study and EF skills. |
OP your child would register for Resource to fill one of their two elective spots. It meets just as regularly as all the other classes. Resource is only available for students with an IEP. A similar class is offered for students with a 504 plan. |
To clarify, our experience is at a different MCPS school (not Tilden). |
