Our ped referred us to Children's National, but their waitlist is so long they're not even taking new names and told me to call back in February. We've got a likely autistic/ADHD kindergartener and would really like to see a developmental ped ASAP.
Do you need a full ASD evaluation or a dev ped screening visit?
The latter is easier to get: Fill out the intake packet, mail or email it in. Every week start calling individual locations, not main line (e.g. takoma, rockville, VA if you are in VA) and ask for any cancellations. We got in in 2 weeks. This requires some flexibility on your part because they can give a random time slot on a short notice. Children's has good dev peds and takes insurance. That's why there is such a waitlist. It's worth the effort, IMHO.
If you want to go straight to ADOS - it's indeed a horrendously long wait list at Childrens. I think a better bet would be evaluated in a private practice if you have some out of network benefits in order to get the diagnosis and get any recommended services approved by insurance and started. Just my 2 cents.
