Dog only eats home cooked chicken with rice but not dog food

Dog had parasite so vet told us to give home cooked white rice with chicken, now dog’s cleared from parasite but he no longer eats dog food. We mixed his dog food with chicken and rice then he refused to take a bite. We now added cooked carrot to chicken and rice. What else should we add to give our dog a balanced diet?

Ask your vet.

You need to talk to your vet, but plenty of recipes online. We do a mix of veggies, quinoa or rice, a protein, tofu, chickpeas, potato (preferably sweet potato), eggs, cheese, beans.

We cut the chicken portion down a little at a time, adding in kibble in a separate pile until it was half and half. (Never mixing.) We just had to hang tough, and eventually she ate it. She now loves the kibble too.

How about stir dry with canned dog food for a while to get him back on the plan? Sounds like he knows how to get what he wants and it's a battle of wills.

It's hard to feed a dog a homemade diet that is truly balanced. Unless you you prepared to do everything posted at 17:09

I don't think there are any vets on here.

Can you blame him? Dry kibble vs chicken? We do Farmers dog and I realize it is expensive but we dont do doggy daycare or have any grooming issue which also costs money!

He can skip a few meals and be fine. He’ll start eating again when he gets hungry. You don’t need to pander to this.

He forgot that he is a dog. Remind him.

Nothing. Eventually he will get hungry enough to eat the dog foot.

your dog gets better meals than my 11 year old son

He won't starve. When he's skipped enough meals, he'll eat, OP. Just make sure he has water.

Hi it’s OP, thanks everyone, we will try different methods suggested here and hopefully it will work for our dog.

This dog is bragging to all the other dogs at the park how well he trained his human.

If cost is an issue you can wet the dog food with warm water to make it more appealing.
