Dance Classes for Boys (prefer Northern VA)

Anonymous
My 11 year old son enjoys musical theater and would like to start dance classes to further this interest.

What are some classes/studios that
-have boys?
-and/or are in Northern Virginia
-and/or are musical theater related

Ballet Nova has classes specifically for boys, but they are ballet classes. That's where most would tell you to start anyway though.

I don’t have a nearby recommendation, but at my DD’s studio boys gravitate to tap and hip hop/pop dance (their name for it, not mine). I would call studios and just ask which classes have boys currently enrolled and choose them based on critical mass. Musical theater-related might be easier found at a summer camp.

Malina's Dancing Garden. Owner really gets boys.

It is extremely sexist to exclude girls and other genders from a class.

I mean, not really. There are different skills being taught. Most of the classes are for all dancers at the same level.

Are you also outraged that there are gender-separated sports teams??

Ballet Nova also has jazz and musical theater classes.

Maryland Youth Ballet has a male-identifying ballet class (I think it used to be called boys intro but changed this year). I believe PP is right that this class and other similar classes teach different skills

PP here who mentioned different skills. I will also say that I am confident our studio would welcome any male-identifying or non-binary dancers in the boys class. They also updated the dress code to reference male-identifying and female-identifying dancers.

Are you trolling? Or do you really think this?

Metropolitan School of the Arts in Kingstowne has a robust musical theater/jazz/tap program. They don't have boys-only classes though so you'd have to ask them which sections have the most boys.

Perfect Pointe (Arlington) has a musical theatre dance class. You could probably still join since it’s only met a couple times this year. It’s great.

DAV in McLean has a great musical theater teacher.

Perfect Pointe has a Saturday Musical Theater 1 class. My son is in it, the only boy right now. Still space: https://www.perfectpointe.com/arlington/2023-2024-school-year/

Call up and they may let you come take a class as a trial run.

Where are you? Encore Dance in Chantilly is also an option.
