Yondr Pouches at Deal

Anonymous
I thought someone else would have posted this by now, but really? They're going to issue each kid a Yondr pouch, require daily use, and CONFISCATE phones for a whole term if not used? I can't even imagine how many kids are going to miss buses because they have to wait to unlock their pouch. This is what DCPS spends money on.

Eh. Kids won’t miss their busses. I for one would be thrilled to get cell phones out of classrooms. Have you ever been to a concert with the pouches? They can be unlocked really quickly.

I’m absolutely thrilled they’re doing this.

I'm surprised there isn't a uniform policy for things like this. I also agree it is a good thing. My son's middle school locks phones in a secure box with individual compartments for different people's phones, and they get them at the end of the day. Kids don't need phones during the day.

Yondr pouches were tried at Wilson and failed miserably, but that is because teachers did not enforce the use and in each class the phones were locked and then unlocked. At Deal phones used to be confiscated if used during the day and kids had to pay a fine in the office to get them back. Not sure how it works now but Yondr will only work if they are locked and removed from the kids. They are easy to hack otherwise.

Perhaps there is a walkable middle school that might be a better fit?

This seems like a waste of money. Why not just have cell phone lockers like they have at other schools?

I am very glad they are trying this.

This is ridiculous. How are 1500 kids going to unlock phones at the end of the day? Dismissal will take 45 minutes to cycle everyone through.

Years of posts on DCUM about how deal is too lax with student behaviors

Deal enacts a very logical cell phone policy to try and curb distractions.

DCUM complains

Mine just graduated Deal and I am bummed this is coming too late for us.

This is great. Should happen at every school - and every concert.

Your child can get home faster if you don’t send them with a phone at all. Problem solved.

Actually it’s quite possible they didn’t spend money on this because there are advocacy orgs out there donating them to schools.

Anyone know is this is DCPS wide with all middle and high schools or just certain ones? I know Hardy is doing it too.
