DC or MD for middle school (Alice Deal x Westland)

Anonymous
Our family will move to the DC area before the fall with a middle school aged child. Our immediate options are to rent in downtown Bethesda to attend Westland MS or rent near Van Ness/Tenleytown to attend Alice Deal.

Commuting aside, we are mainly considering the quality/environment of the schools, as well as feel of the neighborhood (walkability, access to restaurants, entertainment, activities, etc.). We value good academics, course offerings and afterschool extras, engaging and diverse student body, and preferably a not so chaotic environment as DS is on the mellow side. Any feedback appreciated.

Westland!

Westland - Deal is just so overcrowded. Now that MCPS opened Silver Creek, Westland is much smaller. (It was definitely overcrowded before SCMS opened.)

As someone who has had 2 kids at Deal, one still there, MD. Wish we had moved. The quality of Deal has been slipping, it's overcrowded and the way you describe your son, it won't be a great fit.

Our kids are in DCPS because we have lived in DC long enough that moving out is unappealing. If I were starting fresh, I would live in Maryland.

Deal if your child intends to pursue a degree in anti-racism. MCPS if you want them to be gainfully employed.

If you are posting on this forum, you probably are a westland type of person for schools. Also downtown Bethesda is bigger, taller, and denser than Tenleytown/Van Ness. So if you are an urbanist, pick Bethesda. If you care about school quality, pick Bethesda.

We are another family that wished we had listened to others and moved to Maryland instead of staying in DC.

I toured both Deal and Westland. Westland is hands down the more organized and impressive school. But your kid will have to get a bus and get up much earlier than Deal. Also Bethesda is pretty uninspiring compared to DC neighborhoods. Deal and JR will get your kid a solid education- it’s really a lifestyle/values question. Another factor weighing for Bethesda is that there is much more rental inventory there, without the safety issues in NW DC rentals.

I’m eventually going to be making this choice for HS and am still not sure! Most likely I will pick Bethesda because the HS is close and won’t require a bus ride.

I live in AU Park and I would pick Bethesda in your situation. Both DCPS and MCPS have gone downhill the last few years but my guess is that MCPS is still doing better than DCPS.
The only thing DCPS has over MCPS is the more sensible HS start times

We have a kid at Deal and many friends with kids at Westland and, TBH, Westland sounds as if it has many of the same issues as Deal, some better but some of them much, much worse.
