Hospital Grade Pump - Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal Employee Program

Anonymous
When my son was born he had difficulty gaining weight and with Kaiser insurance we were allowed to borrow a hospital grade pump for 6 weeks (for free).

Trying to research for a friend whose baby was just born and is on a feeding tube if Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal Employee program would allow the same. If so, what would be the process to get it?

Thanks in advance.

Call your plan and ask for a prior authorization. If they push back discuss with your child’s doctor what paperwork is needed.

They will not pay for a rental pump just because. It will take a phone call to them to ask for this specific situation, and the answer may be that they steer her to the free pumps they offer.

Not routinely, but maybe in this circumstance. They offered Spectra to everyone when I had my kid though and it was nearly hospital grade.

The BCBS FEP Basic plan does not offer Spectra. I'm not sure about the FEP Standard.

This is a question for BCBS FEP. Also, the hospital should be able to prescribe it.
