Board shorts for women?

Anonymous
Does anyone locally carry them in NOVA Fairfax area? I can't seem to find them anywhere. Is the style completely out? I need to wrap something around my big hips and I prefer the board shorts that I can go into the water with instead of actually wraps that shouldn't get completely wet.

OP here: I am not really big. I am 5ft 1in and weight around 118. It is just most of the weight is still in my hips.

REI. LL Bean. Patagonia. Possibly Sports Authority.

Athleta and Title 9 if you don't mind having them shipped.

Skirted swim bottoms might also work for you. Some are really cute and not at all granny-ish.

09:41 -- you are so not helpful. Swimsuits only look hot on in shape women, but everyone deserves to go swimming.

I know you are looking for board short recs, but try swim skirts!! Much more feminine. There are some that are attached to the bikini bottoms and others that are pull-on. I order from Lands End - you can return at Sears.

OP here: I do have a bunch of swim skirts, but my DH doesn't like them on me. For some reason, he says they're for old ladies... btw - I am almost 40!

..forgot to mention that I don't like the way one pieces feel on my in the hot sun and I like to get a bit of tan on my tummy as well. So, one pieces are out.

I bet you'd look great in board shorts. I have some from Athleta (online only) that are terrific. They have a built-in thin bikini inside, so you don't need to wear anything else under them. I am also quite in shape but prefer them over bikini bottom bathing suits for a variety of reasons.

Patagonia in Georgetown probably has some, also.

My husband hates the swimskirts too, even the pull on ones...but he loves the boyshorts I bought.

Thanks everyone for your support! That is, except for 9:41, who said you have to 'be in shape' to look good in board shorts. I do not think that is true. .. for the most part, I am in shape, except for after having 3 kids, I am not completely toned down enough to want everyone to see my ass in a bikini bottom, thus would prefer to wear board shorts to cover up.

i've been looking for these too. ordered some from athleta..not bad but not really board short materials (bathing suit material) plus they were a little higher waisted than i would prefer. didn't realize there was a patagonia in georgetown...maybe they would have some.

let me know if you find a good place for them.

i agree...i'm not in bad shape but hate parading around in a bikini bottom (and having to shave!)

I got those shorts from Athleta too and I really hate them. They fit strangely, and they're so high-waisted that they don't really look like they're meant to be worn in the water. I ordered two pairs and wore one already, but I'm returning the other ones.
